Tony Zumbano,
Fleet Captain Assistant, Power
Email: shortcircat@comcast.net

To All Members,
With the departure of our Fleet Captain, as assistant, our Commodore has asked me to step up and assume the role of your Fleet Captain for the remainder of the year. I have requested that Tony Zumbano be my assistant and he has agreed. Memorial Day weekend is upon us and we hope to see everyone come out for the Blessing of the Fleet. The Blessing of the Fleet is a tradition that began centuries ago in Mediterranean fishing communities. The practice was predominantly Catholic and a blessing from the local priest was meant to ensure a safe and bountiful season.
In April, we had a short, but wonderful cruise to Palm Island Marina with 14 boats in attendance. My wife, Bobbie and I were the cruise leaders. The weekend activities included a cookout and music trivia game on Friday night. Saturday had everyone out and about the marina doing the scavenger hunt followed that evening with dinner at Johnny Leverocks. This month the cruise was led by Michael and Lynn Nemser and we travelled to the newly-opened Sarasota Yacht Club. Everything that we had heard about how amazing and beautiful it is was not the least bit exaggerated. The cruise leaders had us up early Saturday morning for a walk across the Ringling Bridge to the Farmers Market. We had a large group of VYC members join us for dinner in the club on Saturday.
If you would like to join us on future cruises, please contact the cruise leader. If you have any questions, please contact me.

Greetings to all!
First, introductions may be in order. I am Jack Stevenson, your new Fleet Captain Sail for 2010. My wife Janice and I have been active sailors for 30 + years. My sailing background includes long distance ocean racing and blue water passages. Our cruising experience extends from Maine to the Caribbean and the Gulf Coast as far as New Orleans.
We currently sail our Pilothouse sloop “Bluegrass” out of slip 16 at the VYC. The Pilothouse design gives us the advantages of a trawler without giving up the freedom associated with sailing. To show just what well rounded boaters Janice and I are, this past October on a visit to the Chesapeake Bay we attended both Trawler Fest in Solomons Island and the Annapolis Sailboat Show in the same week!
I am looking forward to making new boating friends and renewing old friendships during this upcoming year.

See you on the water!
Jack Stevenson
